Lean Into "Yes!"

One day closer to Saturday... and I’m feeling a bit anxious—because I never imagined myself here.
After years in Toastmasters, I said “yes” to some

thing new: competing in a Table Topics contest. If you’re not familiar, Table Topics is the impromptu speaking portion of Toastmasters. You’re given a prompt, and then—ready or not—you speak for up to 2 minutes and 30 seconds. No script, no prep, just go.
It's unnerving… and incredibly freeing.
As a public speaking coach, I spend a lot of time helping others craft compelling, polished presentations. But Table Topics reminds me that sometimes the magic happens when you don’t have time to overthink. I’ve given some truly off-the-wall answers—talking about grocery shopping in a swimsuit (not something I’ve done) or drawing life lessons from Gilligan’s Island. And honestly? I’m fascinated by the part of me that’s just kind of weird. It’s a break from the professional polish and a chance to tap into spontaneity, creativity, and courage.
Saturday marks the final round for me, after advancing through club, area, and division levels. Not how I pictured 2025 starting—but this year, I’m leaning into “yes” and attempting to overthink less.
If you’re someone who gets stuck in your head, Table Topics at a Toastmasters meeting might be the playful challenge you didn’t know you needed.
I wonder what I’ll come up with on Saturday? 🤔👏🎤
(I'm pictured here alongside fellow club member, Paul Moehring, who gave an exceptional prepared speech as an International Speech Contestant.)
